Lipica Stud Farm

I adore nature and horses. Unfortunately, I have increasingly less time for active riding; but also a walk among the horses helps me to relax and gives me new strength. If the this walk is among white Lipizzaner horses in intact nature with a Mediterranean and alpine climate, the pleasure is even greater.

The Lipica Stud Farm is one of the most beautiful cultural-historical monuments of the Republic of Slovenia and a home to more than 350 Lipizzaner horses. To say in other words, it is the original stud farm of the Lipizzaner, one of the oldest cultural horse breeds. With the tradition of over 435 years it is also one of the world’s oldest stud.

Established in 1580 with only one purpose – horse breeding, today it still represents a unique environment where the spatial arrangement, buildings and cultural landscape remain loyal to the original activity – top – notch horse breeding.

Its beauty, strength and courage reflect centuries of habitation in the stony, rugged Karst environment, battle with Bora wind and lack of running water. Lipica has developed his own Classical Riding School with breathtaking elements in the air and on the ground performing all over the world.

Lipica Stud Farm today welcomes visitors from all over the world. Guided tours are offered year round, including Lipikum – Museum of the Lipizzaner. Performances of the Lipica Classical Riding School are given from April to October when it is also possible to see the training session of the Lipica Classical Riding School. An inviting offer for families is to enjoy a ride in a Lipizzaner-drawn carriage, while experienced riders can take part in weekly riding courses and trail riding programmes.

An autumn day at the Lipica estate is just perfect for a Sunday day trip, full of energy and positive emotions. And if you finish the day off with a dinner in one of the excellent nearby karst restaurants, the looming working week will be more beautiful and more successful.

»Velbanca«. The oldest and most important stable in Lipica: It was built in 1703 as the central building of the imperial stud farm. The stable represents the symbol of Lipica and its history.

Let the thought of preserving the values of several houndred years lead you along a white wooded fence decorating the routes of estate.

The lipizzaner, what a wonderful horse. Its dark lively eyes gaze bravely and nobly at the world. Its pride is engrained in its genes and its dignity in its character. Its relationship with the rider is based on respect and love.

Lipizzaners are born dark. Due to a mutant gene they soon become white at an age of four to seven years. Schooling of young stallions begins at the age of three years and last four to five years. They learn accurate movements, different forms of walks, turns and jumps.

Mares are placed in a joint stable and enjoy free breeding. During the grazing season the entire herd, together with the foals, graze during the day.

The architectural centre of the stud farm was formed on the remains of the building of the former mansion of Bishop of Trieste.

The mighty avenues of trees cast their shadow on all main trails of Lipica. On picture Avenue of Vienna.
